doing a professional level film course is definitely worth it.

it will brush aside any notions of glamour in the film-industry you may have. it's hard, manual, work.

i did a two week panico course
    http://www.panicofilms.com/fou.htm
which led to many exciting shoots at the arse end of the film industry (in 1995), BECTU membership, and a duck curry with guy ritchie.

heres a link to a nottingham based orginisation that mainly show films, but they do film courses as well. i've not been on one so im not shure if its any use, but it might be worth at least checking out there web site

    http://www.broadway.org.uk/

most of there courses are "film studies", but i think they occasionally do film making courses
